Beginner Guide: What to Know Before Day One

Beast of Reincarnation is a technical souls-like — but one deliberately built so you don't need veteran reflexes. Here's what to internalize before August 4, and the priorities for your first hours, based on everything confirmed in previews and developer breakdowns.

Pre-release edition · Expanded with tested tips from August 4, 2026

1. Pick your difficulty honestly

The game launches with multiple difficulty options, including a Story Mode built for players who want the world, atmosphere, and narrative without the harshest challenge. Game Freak has said outright the game is designed to be finishable by people who aren't action experts. There is no wrong door here — the parry system is the same on every setting, only the punishment changes.

2. Learn the parry rhythm before anything else

Emma's katana combat is deflection-first, in the cadence of Sekiro. Two reasons parrying is non-negotiable:

  • It's your defense — dodging exists, but deflection is the intended answer to most strings.
  • It's your economy — every clean parry banks the points that power Koo's Blooming Arts. Skipping parries means fighting with half your kit.

3. Use the command menu as a pause-to-think button

Opening Koo's command menu slows combat dramatically. Beginners should abuse this: overwhelmed by a swarm, confused by a boss's new phase — open the menu, breathe, look at the arena, then decide. The developers built this "tempo" in on purpose; it's not cheating, it's the design.

4. First-hours priorities

  1. Follow the road. The game is stage-based, not open world — a wide road east to west. Explore the width of each district for gear and spirit stones, but you can't get truly lost.
  2. Clear Blighted Forests deliberately. They're the dungeon spine: lesser Malefacts, then a Nushi at the center. Treat the mobs as parry practice for the boss.
  3. Spend early skill points on synergy. Anything that improves the parry→points→Koo loop compounds for the whole game (details in the builds guide).
  4. Watch the environment. Areas transform — plains become forests, sometimes abruptly, spawning Malefacts. Scenery shifting is a warning, not decoration.

5. Mistakes to avoid

  • Hoarding Koo's points. The pool refills through parries; points you die holding were wasted.
  • Ignoring Story Mode out of pride. Difficulty can be your tool per-wall, not a permanent identity.
  • Rushing past gear. Ranged, stealth, and aggressive loadouts are all real — early pickups decide which options you even get to try.
  • Looking up at the sky. The world's one stated rule. We don't know what happens yet. We will by launch week.
