Platforms, price, and Game Pass

When does it release, and on what?

August 4, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via both Steam and the Microsoft Store. It's on Xbox Game Pass day one (Ultimate and PC Game Pass), supports Xbox Play Anywhere — buy or install once, then share saves and achievements between Xbox and PC — and is Handheld Optimized for devices like the ROG Xbox Ally. Regional unlock times and preload details are on the release date page.

How much does it cost, and what do the editions include?

The standard edition is $59.99 / 59,99 € / ¥8,980 — notably not a $69.99 release. Pre-ordering any edition adds the Brown Shiba skin for Koo plus 30,000 Amber, the in-game currency. The Digital Deluxe edition stacks more cosmetics and a resource head start on top:

  • Koo skins: Black Shiba and Brown Shiba
  • Emma's hat: the Oni Hat
  • The sword Big Dipper
  • 100,000 Amber
  • A set of crop seedlings for the farming system

In Japan, the PS5 physical edition from Happinet permanently includes a DLC code with deluxe-equivalent content, and participating shops offer retailer bonuses such as canvas boards and acrylic stands. Everything on this list is cosmetic or a convenience boost — nothing suggests gameplay is gated behind the deluxe tier. Full comparison on the editions page.

Is it on Game Pass? What about PlayStation Plus?

Yes on Xbox: Beast of Reincarnation launches day one on Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, confirmed by Xbox Wire. There is no equivalent on PlayStation — PS5 players buy it outright. If you own both a Series X|S and a gaming PC, Game Pass is clearly the cheapest way to try it, and Play Anywhere means your progress follows you between the two.

Is there a demo?

No. As of July 2026, no demo has been released or announced for any platform. Treat any site claiming a playable demo download with suspicion — the only legitimate ways to play before buying are Game Pass at launch or press previews. See the demo tracker for updates.

Gameplay questions

Is Beast of Reincarnation open world?

No. Director Kota Furushima has stated it directly: the game is not open world. You travel a wide road through stage-based "district levels" from east to west across a Japan consumed by the Blight — a route mirroring the real journey from Kanto toward Kyoto — with dynamic, transforming environments and room to explore inside each stage. The director has described the journey as spanning roughly ten stages, each anchored by its own region and threats.

How hard is it? Is there an easy mode?

The combat is demanding and technical — parry-centric, in the vein of Sekiro, and previews consistently describe the deflect timing as strict. But it ships with multiple difficulty options including a Story Mode, and Game Freak has said the game is designed to be finishable by players who aren't action-game experts. The three confirmed build styles (see below) also give you room to play around your weaknesses: a ranged or stealth-leaning setup softens the parry burden considerably. Start with the beginner guide if the genre is new to you.

Is Koo playable?

You control Emma directly at all times. Koo, her blighted dog companion, fights alongside her via a command menu: opening it slows combat to a crawl while you pick his abilities — previews call them Bloom Arts — which consume Florescence Points that refill when Emma lands successful parries. That loop is the heart of the combat: parry well, and your dog hits harder. Full breakdown in the Koo guide.

What are the Nushi?

The Nushi are the giant, Blight-corrupted creatures that rule each district — the game's signature boss encounters. Sealing a Nushi doesn't just clear the region; Emma absorbs its power, folding boss victories directly into character progression. One Nushi anchors each region, which is why the roughly-ten-stage structure matters for pacing. Profiles of every revealed Nushi are on the bosses page.

What builds and progression systems are confirmed?

Game Freak has confirmed three broad playstyles — ranged, stealth, and all-out power — supported by a progression stack of a skill tree, equipment, and Spirit Stones, plus the powers absorbed from sealed Nushi. Pre-launch coverage hasn't detailed respec rules or how far hybrid builds can stretch, so treat build planning as provisional; the builds page tracks what each style looks like in the footage shown so far.

How long is the game?

Director Kota Furushima has estimated about 30 hours of gameplay across the game's roughly ten stages, and press outlets who played extended sessions put a full run at 30–40. That places it well above a typical linear action game and well below a 100-hour open-world epic — consistent with its focused, stage-based structure. Exact main-story and completionist times will be verified through hands-on testing after the August 4, 2026 launch; see how long to beat.

Story and background

Is this a Pokémon game? Why does Game Freak matter here?

It's an original, mature IP — Game Freak's first AAA title and its biggest departure ever, published by Fictions, Inc. rather than The Pokémon Company, and built in Unreal Engine 5. The Pokémon connection shows in the design, though: director Kota Furushima built battle systems for Pokémon generations, and Koo's time-slowing command menu is turn-based DNA inside real-time action. Emma herself is an outcast, shunned for her affliction — about as far from a cheerful monster-collecting protagonist as the studio has ever gone.

Who voices Emma?

Yui Ishikawa — known as the voice of 2B in NieR: Automata — voices Emma in Japanese. Full English cast details haven't been published; the voice cast page tracks confirmations.

Does it have multiple endings?

Not yet confirmed either way. Emma and Koo both "carry a heavy secret," and allies have hidden truths of their own — narrative branching is plausible but unverified, so don't plan a playthrough around it.

What does "never look up at the sky" mean?

The developers presented it as a rule of the world: an ancient legend says "something" floats above, and players are warned not to look. Whether it's a mechanic, a secret, or a narrative device is unknown — deliberately. It's the game's best mystery going into launch.

What do previews say so far?

The prevailing tone is cautious optimism. Outlets that went hands-on praise the parry-and-partner loop — Game Informer's preview is literally titled "Parrying Helps Your Dog" — while reserving judgment on whether a studio famous for turn-based RPGs can sustain souls-like combat quality across a full campaign. Nobody disputes the ambition; the open question is execution over 30-plus hours.
