Beast of Reincarnation Metacritic Score

Chasing the number? Metacritic and OpenCritic scores go live here the moment review embargoes lift around launch. Here's what to expect and where the game's quality debate currently stands.

Scores post at launch, August 4, 2026

Score status: not yet available. Metacritic and OpenCritic aggregate scores only appear once reviews go live, typically 1–2 days before or on release day (August 4, 2026). The review embargo date has not yet been confirmed. Bookmark this page — we update it live.

Is Beast of Reincarnation good?

Too early for a definitive answer, but the pre-release signal is cautiously positive. Beast of Reincarnation is Game Freak's first big-budget action RPG outside the Pokémon series — a parry-focused souls-like set in a far-future Japan consumed by a corruption called the Blight — and the outlets that have actually played it came away encouraged. Game Informer's July 2026 hands-on centered on how the parry system feeds directly into Koo's companion commands, IGN's preview highlighted the tactical layer the dog adds to otherwise fast katana combat, and Pure Xbox wrote that the opening "hooked me from minute one." GameRant went as far as framing its session as a generational step up for the studio.

The consistent caveat across that coverage: everyone has played hours, not the full game. The big unknowns are whether the "one-person, one-dog" system holds up across a complete playthrough, and whether Game Freak — a studio critics have repeatedly dinged for technical issues in recent Pokémon releases — can ship a clean Unreal Engine 5 game. The director has publicly framed the studio's priority as the gameplay experience over raw visual fidelity, which sets expectations: this is a systems-and-feel game, not a graphics showcase.

Where the scores will appear

Once the embargo lifts, expect separate Metacritic pages for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC — Metacritic tracks each platform independently, so the three metascores can diverge if one version has performance problems. OpenCritic, by contrast, aggregates all platforms into a single page and adds two useful extra signals: the top-critic average and the percentage of critics who recommend the game. Metacritic's user score is a separate number that only opens for ratings after release, and it usually takes several days of player reviews to stabilize.

Early on launch day, treat any metascore with caution. The first posted number often reflects fewer than ten reviews; the picture is far more reliable once 20–30 outlets are counted, which typically takes about a week.

What the score will hinge on

FactorWhy it matters to the score
Combat depthWhether the parry → time-slow → Koo loop stays engaging or gets solved early.
Boss designThe genre's make-or-break — colossal Nushi set pieces need to deliver, and the "seal a Nushi, absorb its power" hook has to feel like real progression rather than a checklist.
Technical stateUE5 performance and bugs at launch heavily sway review scores, and Game Freak's recent track record makes this the most-watched line item.
Build varietyThree confirmed playstyles — ranged, stealth, and all-out aggression — plus a skill tree, gear, and Spirit Stones. If they genuinely change how encounters play, reviewers will reward it.
Story payoffEmma and Koo both carry a heavy secret — how the narrative lands affects the score's ceiling.

How this compares to expectations

As Game Freak's first AAA title and first non-Pokémon action RPG at this scale, the bar is "does it prove the studio can do this?" A strong score would reframe Game Freak entirely; a weak one confirms skeptics who see the studio as a one-franchise operation. The Xbox Developer Direct showing in January 2026 did a lot to shift sentiment — extended gameplay of Emma's katana combat and Koo's command-based support system read far more polished than many expected — and the summer preview wave built on that. Still, previews are curated slices. Our own independent take lives on the review page, and it will be verified through hands-on testing after the August 4, 2026 launch.

One factor unique to this release: Game Pass availability will color the conversation, not the number. Reviewers score the game itself, but a day-one Game Pass souls-like reaches a much bigger audience at no extra cost on Xbox and PC, so expect plenty of "must-try on Game Pass" framing around whatever metascore lands. PS5 players pay full price, which raises the value bar on that platform.

Should you wait for the score before buying?

If you are on Xbox or PC with Game Pass Ultimate, there is little reason to agonize: Beast of Reincarnation is included at launch, so you can form your own opinion on day one and the Metacritic number becomes trivia. On PS5, or if you want to own the game outright, waiting 24–48 hours for scores costs you almost nothing — the pre-order bonus (the brown Shiba Inu skin for Koo plus 30,000 Amber) is cosmetic and a currency head start, not exclusive content that vanishes forever at launch in any confirmed way. The Digital Deluxe Edition adds black and brown Shiba skins for Koo, the Oni Hat for Emma, the Big Dipper sword, 100,000 Amber, and crop seedlings; whether that is worth the premium is a value question the reviews themselves won't settle for you. Note there is no demo as of July 2026, so scores and previews are the only pre-purchase signal.

FAQ

When will the Beast of Reincarnation Metacritic score go live?

No embargo date has been announced. For most AAA releases, reviews publish one to two days before launch or on release day itself, which points to scores appearing around August 2–4, 2026. We will post the numbers here the moment they exist.

Will PS5, Xbox, and PC get different scores?

On Metacritic, yes — each platform has its own page and its own metascore. Most reviewers will test one version (commonly PS5 or Xbox Series X), so the PC page may aggregate more slowly. OpenCritic shows one combined score for all platforms.

Is there a demo I can try instead of waiting for reviews?

No. As of July 2026 no demo has been announced for any platform. Game Pass Ultimate on Xbox and PC is the closest thing to a low-risk trial.

Does the Japanese version have anything the score won't reflect?

Content is the same game, but the Japanese PS5 physical edition from Happinet permanently includes DLC codes equivalent to the Digital Deluxe extras, and Japanese retailers offer their own bonus items such as canvas boards and acrylic stands. None of that affects review scoring.

What did critics score Game Freak's previous games?

This is the studio's first original AAA action RPG, so there is no direct precedent — comparisons to Pokémon metascores are of limited use because the genre, engine, budget, and publisher (Fictions, Inc. rather than The Pokémon Company) are all different this time.
